Purpose of the assessment or study

To systematically identify process deviations (such as High Pressure, Low Flow, Reverse Flow, High Temperature) that could lead to equipment damage, toxic releases, explosions, or unplanned shutdowns, and to evaluate the adequacy of engineered and procedural safeguards.

Applicable facility types

Chemical processing plants, petrochemical facilities, pharmaceutical active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) units, oil and gas installations, refineries, and continuous automated process manufacturing lines.

Proposed study scope

Systematic nodal analysis covering designated piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams (PFDs), operating parameters, automated trip interlocks, pressure relief valves, and operational procedures agreed during project scoping.

Scope is structured as a technical proposal framework for client review and adjusted to your facility layout.

Methodology overview

Multi-disciplinary team workshops facilitated by a qualified study leader. The team selects process nodes, applies standard parameter guidewords (More, Less, None, Reverse, As Well As, Part Of), investigates credible causes and consequences, reviews existing safeguards, and formulates prioritized action recommendations.

Client inputs and site visit arrangements

Information required from client

Up-to-date Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Mass & Energy Balances, Process Safety Information (PSI), operating philosophies, interlock logic diagrams, and equipment design datasheets.

Site visit arrangements

Initial physical walkthrough of the process unit to verify P&ID as-built status, field instrument locations, and local manual intervention valves.

Indicative deliverables

Comprehensive HAZOP study report, node-by-node structured study worksheets, prioritized risk action recommendation register, safeguard summary, and attendance logs, subject to agreed scope.

Frequently asked questions

Who should participate in a HAZOP workshop from the client team?
A typical team includes the process engineer, operations supervisor, instrumentation & controls engineer, maintenance specialist, and plant EHS coordinator.
At what project stage should a HAZOP study be conducted?
It is most effective during detailed engineering when P&IDs are frozen, before plant commissioning, or prior to major plant process modifications.
